Leeks and sole

Leeks.  I heard a story somewhere about a small child who had reported that they had been given 'little rolls of Sellotape' as part of their school dinner.  Puzzled, his parent finally ascertained that these were in fact sliced leeks.

Nest to aubergines, these are  perhaps my favourite vegetable.  What's yours?

~~~
Still on food: some very fresh-looking sole on the fish counter yesterday decide Tom that he was going to fulfil a culinary ambition and cook sole à la meuniere, clarified butter and everything.   They are sizzling on the stove as I write. We bought unsalted butter but omitted to buy lemons, so the pan will perforce be de-glazed with a mixture of white wine and the delicious raspberry vinegar which Tom's daughter brought us as a present, (along with some very good plain balsamic, which proves to be excellent on kippers).  Culinary revelation or abomination?  I'll let you know.
so, can i come over for supper?
some of my favourites are brussels sprouts, which i slice thinly and sautee in browned butter (this ends up tasting far better than it has any right to, given its simplicity), aubergines (grilled on the BBQ), green beans, baked asparagus...oh geez, i think i like all vegetables, really.
bon appetit!
Green peppers, spiced and stir fried. Fresh romaine lettuce, kale wrapping, small carrots -raw, spinach in saag paneer, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, cherry tomatoes, fresh green beans lightly steamed...
Love this post!
I personally LOVE watercress, slighty steamed, with a few drops of sesame oil, soy sauce, drops of red vinegar and mirin. I can eat that everyday.
Not that legumes really qualify for vegetables, nothing compares to black eyed peas. I am also a big fan of corn, potatoes, carrots and raw spinach. On occasion I enjoy asparagus and broccoli.
Earlier this evening I was down in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC and had one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Typically I detest Thai food for some reason but a friend and myself dined at Bangkok Joe's and it was incredible. I was tempted to take a picture of the food it was so good.
Last night, my friend of friends stir-fried a vegetarian delight in my kitchen ~ zucchini slices, green peppers, quinoa, a shallot, and ginger with a touch of sesame seed oil, soy sauce, and several dashes of whatever else she found in my spice cabinet. This is my favourite until she cooks up the next batch of deliciousness.
Well, how mouth-watering, and none of the guilt and love-hate reactions attached to cupcakes either. Thank you very much, and welcome Jackie, your blog is wonderful.
In fact there are very few veggies I don't like. Green peppers are one of those things like coffee which never taste quite as good as the aroma of them promises, and I find I often buy those hairy black Japanese radish things and don't like them as much as I think I'm going to so they sit around and get a bit flaccid. The other day I chopped one in this state up and threw it in a veggie curry, and it was surprisingly good. I can't get too excited about turnips.
I will certainly allow legumes as a veg, and indeed also jacket potato, since the jacket introduces enough fibre, vitamin C and folates to qualify.
I had forgotten about Chinese greens which are probably up there with leeks, and watercress is also wonderful, Jackie's recipe sounds very good. Spinach I love, especially in Indian food too. Peas here are often tiresome and tasteless olive green petits pois, but really good fat fresh garden peas are sublime and I can eat them in sandwiches with brown bread and butter.
Well, what with advertising a blog birthday and asking people about their favourite veg, I've certainly kept the comments coming through the weekend, shameless blog-tart that I am! Thanks all again for stopping by.
Cor, this was just the right post to read with a G&T before heading off to to buy something foodie - I'd forgotten how much I love veggies. I feel an aubergine overload coming on...
Beans in one form or another. Even though Pythagoras is said to have banned their consumption by his followers.
