Ballade des dames du temps jadis...

The sad decline of Melusina.  How are the wine corks fallen...

(Where are the snows?)

So funny! We had a 9 foot giant (named Roderick) and he started lurching, then bending, and finally just crashed and burned.

A hard, persistent rain today has removed the last traces.

I've really enjoyed reading through your snow chronicles. I wonder if that's been the main blast now, or if we are going to have more of this winter stuff to come? Reading through your post about supplies (where Tom is on the sofa, watching snooker with Molly) made me wonder if I should stock up a bit. All of that Christmas entertaining has given me a dread of grocery stores and the stove. Hopefully, not a permanent state.

(Sadly, I did not see the Audrey Hepburn movie you called to my attention. I was probably doing something really unimportant as well. Sigh.)

Look at the green grass below! So nice to see green at this time of year.

Have you stocked up just in case another storm blows by? My form of prepping for more consists of buying double mittens for everyone. Gloves and such seem to melt away faster than the snow.

There's an expression of "ontology recapitulating phylogeny" in human (particularly pre-natal) development. And now looking at the series of photos, it's like she's returning to a primordial state (the second to last one looks like the fossil of an early humanoid / platypus type creature). And then she's just a couple of hunks of rock.

But maybe there's another way of looking at it: she's sublimating :) Sounds so graceful and sublime.

ack, that should be ontogeny, not ontology...

Hehheee! All this talk of snow had me missing it so much this winter. But I can't complain that we are having such a mild January, up to 12C some days. The snowdrops, witch hazel and croci are blooming. I've never seen the latter out so early! The local ski hill that is being used for some Olympic events is talking about bringing some snow from somewhere else!!!

A must-read blog. When you're not being witty you're being instructive and sometimes it's difficult to tell. I never knew jadis was anything other than an adverb. And my paperback French-French Dictionnaire Universel (Two euros in Lodève market) seemed to confirm this. But massive and definitive Collins Robert quickly established that Box Elder, as expected, was ahead of the game.

Am I reading something sinister into Bee's first comment? After all, the name chosen is not a common one. And the behaviour described is reminiscent of... well, I won't go into that.

... and we have lost Atlantis. Ah, the sadness of two shrinking mounds in the tundra.

Oh no, no, no. You know there is only one film in the whole world that makes me cry every time I watch it: The Snowman. Every time when he melts away I sob. I just can't help it.
