Oh, me too! It is amazing how blog friends can become so dear. We did meet him and Heidi a few years ago on our UK visit. They were both such lovely people.

I know you were very close to Joe, sharing your writings for example. Many hugs and condolences on the loss of your good friend.

I will miss Joe's near daily blog posts with his wonderful photos and gentle humour and wisdom.

Lucy, I tried to ring you yesterday to let you know, but couldn't find a correct number for you. I know how important your friendship was to joe. your blogging partnership was a real joy to him in recent years and even more important in recent weeks and months as his physical world became smaller. his virtual and intellectual world never dimmed. pippa

Lucy, Thank you for the photograph. I too for the moment feel lost for words. Joe was reading, blogging, cooking and listening to the radio to the last. Your collaboration on "Handbook For Explorers" was there and we referred to it at one point recently. This collaboration meant so much to Joe.

Thank you for doing what I signally failed to do: publish a photograph. In the small hours I suddenly recalled I did have a photograph; it was taken officially as we were attending an event, with our wives, at the London Zoo. It may have been the same dinner-jacket occasion I allude to when he first appeared in public with a self-tied bow tie. For some reason he adopted a snake-like pose and seems slightly self-conscious (very unusual) and the tie is very badly tied. Mine is smugly well-tied. And there you have some sort of clue to o65393968 ur relationship

I wish I had more to offer you than thoughts of love, dear Lucy.
Thank you for this photo. I had gone back to October 2013 when he had posted a 'selfie'. Gentleness!

Thank you, everyone, especially Pippa and Lucas, who have lost father and brother.

The photo was from almost exactly five years ago, taken in the café National Portrait Gallery in London. He was reluctant to be photographed and I had to make it quick and sneaky. He has one of the most elusive and Protean photographic faces; no two pictures of him ever look like the same person and none look really quite like him. His 'selfies' were terribly severe. But I do like this one.

Such sad news, his encouragement meant so much and his quiet pleasure at all life's tiny gifts was an example to me.
