Hand

A yoga exercise involves holding my wrist with one had and making a fist of the other and rotating it. My hand becomes an alien, ugly thing, the head of something monstrous, reddening because I am clasping too hard in my discomfort with it.

I bow my head to those who engage in yoga. Flexible pretzels. Prost!

All I can think of with my pathetic knobby arthritic fingers is "ouch!".

I want to say that, catching up on neglected blogs now that the "holiday" travail is over, your blog is just beautiful. Your write, you photograph, you think, you create, you give such pleasure. Thanks, Lucy, for the loveliness you find out there in the world and reveal to your readers.

It is fascinating how parts of us can become alien so easily.

As an exercise a drawing teacher once instructed me to hold out one hand and and draw it with the other. I had a similar experience to you

That's such a startling description. I tried the exercise to see what you meant, and it can seem like that.

This also reminds me of people who have neurological conditions where they can't recognize their own limbs as belonging to them. There are also other disorders where people want to cut off their own healthy limbs because they feel they're strange and don't belong on their body. In any case, human perception is fragile and definitely not as straightforward as we'd like to think.
