I seem to be going through a period of spontaneous internet telepathy, where no sooner does a word, theme, poem come up on a blog or in an e-mail, but the next thing I go to it's there too. Bee, following a conversation about laughter, tells me that the kind of screamy, whoopy, loud girly laughter of which I appear to be inherently incapable is known as squee-ing, a very descriptive term I'd not heard before. Then I went over to another friend's Tumblr blog and found this under the heading 'Squeeeee!'.
If I could squee, this would certainly be something I would squee about.

That was a wonderful thing for me to see first thing today. Animal rescue is one thing I really care about.
This one went viral if I have anything to say about it. I have taken it and posted it on Facebook, me and millions of others, I suppose.
Did you check these guys out??
Their schedule would make you flinch. They are working fools, world wide. I have never heard of them and they seem to be everywhere. There seems to be a large number of videos. I watched several and each is amazing. The diversity of their performances...
And they are heavy into benefit performances, lots of fundraising.
Thank you for this.
did you see porridge's guest barking appearance at the end....
Love this,
Just put it on my family Facebook post.
i'm not normally one who does this, but it makes me wanna go
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
Well how very surreal. I especially like the bit where the dog stands on the man's bottom. And the little jumping dog near the end.
And 'nothing ever doesn't change but nothing changes much' was the stand-out line!
I predict zhoen will love this one!!
Oh what a great way to start my day. I shall be passing this one on.
Thanks Lucy.
Squeeful indeed. They opened for They Might Be Giants many years ago, and were remarkable. I think I prefer This Too Shall Pass and accompanying video, but this is great fun as well.
is squeeing the kind of noise emitted by young women loudly admiring a friend's engagement ring or a brand new baby? i break out in rosacea cynicalis when i hear that noise. i do, however, guffaw on occasion. and i have been known to chortle. there have been times, as well, and i am not proud to admit it, that i've giggled. but i think that, like you, i cannot squee. thank the good lord above.
btw, i have just seen this video elsewhere. it is well worth watching more than once.
Can't squee? Or are you merely intent on preserving your middle-class sensibilities? I suspect you could squee if the fulcrum were adjacent, the lever long enough and the person pulling the lever sufficiently cruel. Suppose I were to say you're letting those dogs down by not squee-ing. Traducing them, in fact. That your lack of squee was condemning them to a weekend in a dogs' home. Call yourself a dog-lover. Pah.
There IS something wonderfully descriptive about the word "squee." This video is more of a smile for me, though. (Very impressed by those clever dogs!)
The one who was jumping up and down (near the end) must have been doing a dog squee.
I love the little waggy tails!
Thanks all, and thanks to rr for passing it on. I imagine it's getting everywhere by now. All their videos are fiendishly clever, from what I've seen, or at least wacky, and the music is pretty day-brightening stuff, but I like this specially for the dogs, of course.
As to squeeing, I think that must be a much observed phenomenon that's gone viral too. There's a beer ad on British TV which we rather enjoy with a bunch of girls being shown lots of jewellery and other desirable things and squeeing hysterically, and a bunch of blokes being shown a can of beer and trying to squee.
My problem is with very loud laughing and delighted sounds in general, I just can't project my voice in that way, so guffawing is largely out too, though I like the idea of it. I do laugh plenty, I think most of it might broadly be described as chuckling. I like it when I've read or heard something that's tickled me and I go on smiling and chuckling to myself about it for a long time after; the equivalent of a long finish with wine.
I think I probably giggle quite a bit, but not in a silly girly way, I hope. That state of 'getting the giggles' which would come over one, usually at quite inappropriate moments, and which is a feature of childhood and adolescence, is sadly rare now, though its ghost lingers and pops up sometimes. The laughter of total bodily possession, where I find myself choking, weeping and gasping like an asthmatic occurs occasionally, usually provoked by something on film or TV, not other people, I'm afraid. The 'Naked Gun' spoof with Leslie Nielsen and Priscilla Presley of the potter's wheel scene in 'Ghost' might still do it for me.
I think perhaps squeeing at a newborn baby would be ill-advised, and its mother wouldn't necessarily thank you for it, as it might wake it up.
I daresay I could attempt it if something very important depended on it, and though it would probably sound very inauthentic, the practice is very largely, I think, blatantly insincere and affected, so no one would know the difference. Fortunately I have not been put in this position.
Finally watched, really delightful. *Delight* is a condition that makes me feel like going on with life. Even if you don't squee, I'm glad to hear that occasionally you experience the "total bodily possession" kind of laughter. That is good for what ails.
I squeee a lot. In a post-modern, ironic sort of a way, obviously. Equally obviously I MUST HAVE the boingy dog. The boingy dog and Maizy must breed and produce super sproingy sprogs.
