Amazing, this blog hasn't been active for seven years now, but I still keep the comment notification on, and lo, another Nutch nostalgic appears, marvellous!

And Bar Six! I'd entirely forgotten, but the name rang a bell, and a Google search brought up images of the wrapping which are downright Proustian. Is Dairy Crunch no longer available? I thought I'd seen that more recently.

So much fuss these days about processed foods, when I think of the things we grew and thrived on. As for the Olde English, did you have it in a snakebite, or as it came? I'm not even sure what cider is available in the UK now, cider here in Brittany is a rather different beast, drunk in small(ish) quantities from vessels resembling tea-cups...

Thanks again for stopping by!Lucyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09764296105901909328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-68788321244852327312023-10-31T15:00:51.017+01:002023-10-31T15:00:51.017+01:00I remember Nutch. It came in a useful glass and had a peel off soft white plastic lid (similar to ones found on small pill containers before the invention of child proof caps). It had a thicker consistency to Nutella more akin to the viscosity of cold smooth peanut butter.

I miss Nutch and other things from my childhood such as Bar Six, Fry’s Lime Cream, Cadbury Dairy Crunch and the original Lion Bars. There are so many yummy things no longer available, another favourite from my early twenties was Olde English Cider which was made by Gaymers.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-81914859104294490402018-11-22T15:16:28.491+01:002018-11-22T15:16:28.491+01:00Hello Arash and Philip, and hooray for Nutch nosta...Hello Arash and Philip, and hooray for Nutch nostalgia! That search led me directly to this blog, as the sole source of information concerning nutch.
Philliphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11953910918583413275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-90188507033425530962018-02-10T17:07:55.994+01:002018-02-10T17:07:55.994+01:00I’m desperate to find a picture of an actual label...I’m desperate to find a picture of an actual labelled jar of Nutch!! And I've never even tasted the stuff. Since writing this, we have discovered Cadbury's chocolate spread, which seems to be oddly readily available in many French supermarkets, and which we find we prefer to Nutella.

Thanks again for the visits and the laughs.Lucyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09764296105901909328noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-47457972526303626082011-03-02T14:52:37.408+01:002011-03-02T14:52:37.408+01:00How fantastic that this page appears to be the onl...How fantastic that this page appears to be the only place to support those that remember Nutch. I found myself searching for said product, after trying the recommended dose of 15g of Nutella on a piece of toast yesterday morning. This reminded me of my youth, when during the very early eighties my classmate Mark Wilson would insist on making lengthy and unsubstantiated claims concerning the superior nature of Nutch over Nutella. He was utterly misguided (in my opinion) as it was cheap(er), sickly(er), had a nasty consistency – and indeed arrived in an utterly horrible glass. Whist Nutella had a slightly Italian ring to its name…its competitor just rhymed with crutch.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-50460671527007366392010-11-28T15:45:49.531+01:002010-11-28T15:45:49.531+01:00Nutch was a cheap version of nutella and existed a...Nutch was a cheap version of nutella and existed alongside it at the supermarket a good 30 years ago. The glasses were tall, straight tumblers, with a grape moulding at the bottom. The glasses accompanied my childhood and early adolescence until I left home. Years later another identical glass (clearly of the same provenance) came into my possession and remained there for several years, until it faded away. Unbreakable glasses never break. I can still feel the moulded grapes under my hand and see the glass, misted with age and the mysterious unbreakable ingredients, upon which it based it proud boast.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06972049290586377462noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-54859269368151128542010-11-08T09:19:42.940+01:002010-11-08T09:19:42.940+01:00Think of your blog as a gold-mine. A weak metaphor becoming moribund when one considers the nature of the nugget in this case. Definitely fool's gold.

Yes, I meant to ask about the Dover sole. One Christmas we had Dover soles; it seemed so refaned (apart from the fact that they were so gobblable). But we had to warn the fishmonger way ahead. When we picked them up and handed over a whole load of specie, an irreproachably middle-class lady (woman won't do) asked if there were any more and - fatally - in the same sentence asked the cost. The fishmonger was well known for his outspokenness and I was fascinated how close he came to saying if-you-need-to-ask-what-it-costs, etc, without being totally insulting. So, God bless your baronial estate.

Must dash to Compasses.

PS: Febrile, eh!Roderick Robinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16828395545197001637noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37070024.post-43433075743779864252010-11-08T07:23:06.085+01:002010-11-08T07:23:06.085+01:00Beautiful picture and an insightful piece.
