This post and the last one had me running through a gamut of emotions with you. (And if I lived closer, I'd thrash White Van Man with my germanically-inclined temper. Jerk!) And yet, I have to think that you and Tom are having an effect on this young woman's life, the one with the Saxo for sale. Continue to be good-hearted. Not many people are in this life. Being good-hearted is a good thing. Your words: "We've been very good and patient and kind with each other, even when we've been quite tired and ragged" spoke to deep deep place in my heart. Thank you, sweet Lucy! Fur ruffles to Molly and good vibes to Tom! Car careened off the road, crashed through a blackberry thicket and ended up smashed into a huge boulder. The airbags deployed, Zute screamed with fear. My first thought was, oh God, I've killed my dog. I couldn't get out of the car because the blackberries were smashed up against the door. Since I was close to the ferry, lots of people I knew stopped, the police came. I was a spectacle.

Zute was okay but the car was undrivable. I never saw it again. I still feel the guilt and remorse of that day. After that I drove my mother's nice Camry, but in a couple of months a granddaughter totaled that one too. Now I have a completely utilitarian little thing. A boring little car that I don't love at all. It is very wise of you to get a new car you can love. And I think 4 doors really is good for Mol.

I'm glad to be back reading your beautifully written blogs again. Can't see me driving a sweet car but then I do come from the North.

Going back to LHD vs. RHD, the differences between the two might be said to define the Robinsons' marriage. Taking the overnight ferry from Portsmouth to Caen meant we arrived on French soil (well tarmac) sixish in the AM in time for lunch somewhere near our French house at Drefféac (or, if you like its thinly disguised fictional form: Médréac). Even so, I liked to press on once we'd emerged from the seventh circle of hell round you-know-where. This involved a certain amount of devil-may-care overtaking for which VR, sitting in the passenger seat, became my unwilling spotter given my disadvantaged position. Have no fear, nobody was put at risk and for every five opportunities only one would be taken. "I think if you're very, very quick," VR would say and I would emerge from behind the backside of some poid lourd to find myself staring up 1.5 km of empty road terminating in a dot that might just have been one of those strange single-cylinder mini-diesel cars that I think are handed out to the blind by the French government.

I take it that whenever the Ks travel à deux they do it in their LHD car and you are not required to "spot". It is a good way, however, of checking up on the shakiness or otherwise of the union.
